Twit tweets prompt news service to ax Twitter account

TOKYO (majirox news) — 47News, a news website operated by Kyodo News and regional newspapers from across Japan, decided to ax its Twitter microblogging account on July 23 due to improper personal remarks a rogue employee made on it, operator Press Net Japan Co. said.

A contract worker for a sub-contractor entrusted with editorial work for 47News tweeted personal comments about news stories, including praising the death penalty and criticizing opponents of stress tests currently being carried out on nuclear reactors across Japan.

Press Net Japan officials admitted that they had been lax in dealing with the site’s Twitter account.

“We posted a message without making a proper check of personal opinions being expressed by editorial staff,” Press Net Japan President Masaru Imai said. “Our management was not good enough and I apologize.”

47News is a news website set up by the Kyodo News wire service and regional newspapers from across Japan with the aim of providing news from all of the country’s 47 prefectures.
