Homeless man arrested for not paying 180,000 yen Tokyo to Osaka cab fare

TOKYO (majirox news) — A man who took a 500 kilometer (310 miles) cab ride from Tokyo to Osaka and then failed to pay the roughly 180,000 yen (about $2,190) fare was arrested July 24, Osaka Prefectural Police said.

Kiyoshi Mizugaki, 67, unemployed of no fixed address, was arrested for fraud after he was found to be carrying only about 6,000 yen (about 76) in cash following the trip that took almost six hours to make.

He admits to the allegations.

“I’m struggling to get by and wanted the police to arrest me,” he told the police.

Police said that Mizugaki hailed the cab at Tokyo Station at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, asking the driver to take him to Shin-Osaka Station. The driver complied, arriving in the early hours of the following morning and asking Mizugaki to pay the fare of about 180,000 yen, including expressway charges. Mizugaki informed the driver he did not have the money to pay, so the driver reported him to a police box at the train station.
