Over 70% support Kan’s anti-nuke stance, poll shows

TOKYO (majirox news) — Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s anti-nuclear stance and wish for Japan to end its dependence on nuclear power generation is supported by 70.3% of voters, according to a survey by Kyodo News.

Of those surveyed about Kan’s anti-nuclear stance made clear during a speech earlier this month, 38.7% said they fully supported it, while another 31.6% agreed with it to some extent.

Other news emanating from the weekend phone poll was not so encouraging for the prime minister with the support rate for his Cabinet falling to an all-time low of just 17.1%, a 6.1 percentage point fall from the rate in a poll at the end of June.

In addition, his plans to raise the consumption tax rate to 10% as part of an overhaul of the social insurance and tax systems were opposed by 52.2% of those surveyed with support at 45%.
