TOKYO (majirox news) — Prime Minister Naoto Kan told reporters July 29 that he wants to make Japan’s move away from dependence on nuclear power generation a policy of the national government.

“We want to aim to become a society that is not dependent on nuclear power generation and move forward as a government with a planned reduction of reliance on it,” Kan said.

Kan’s statement was the first in which he has indicated he wants to make a move away from nuclear power official government policy.

He first publicized his anti-nuclear stance during a July 13 news conference, but subsequently had to repeatedly stress that his position had been a personal one following heated criticism over his remarks from members of his own ruling Democratic Party of Japan, as well as opposition parties led by the Liberal Democratic Party.

Kan made Friday’s announcement following the issue of an interim report on decisions made by an energy and environment meeting, which did not touch on the nuclear issue, but he is moving toward making a shift away from nuclear power generation a policy of his Cabinet.
