65% of voters want Kan out of office by end of August

TOKYO (majirox news) — More than two-thirds of Japanese voters want Prime Minister Naoto Kan to resign within the end of this month, according to a joint survey by the Nikkei newspaper and TV Tokyo from July 29 to 31.

Respondents hope to see Kan quit early, with 49% of those polled wanting him out “as quickly as possible” and a further 16% “by the end of August” when the current session of the Diet ends.

Support for Kan’s Cabinet also fell to a record low of 19%, the first time to drop below 20% since the ruling Democratic Party of Japan swept into power in 2009, ending nearly 55 years of almost continuous rule by the Liberal Democratic Party.

Better news for the government came from voters’ attitudes toward implementing a special tax to fund reconstruction of the areas devastated by the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake, with 59% supporting the idea and just 32% opposed, the Nikkei said.
