TOKYO (majirox news) — Support for Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s Cabinet is just 18%, a fall of six percentage points from July, and the lowest-ever recorded for a Democratic Party of Japan government, according to a Yomiuri newspaper poll on Aug. 8.
The unpopular prime minister was not supported by 72% of respondents, a rise of nine percentage points since the previous survey.
Almost 70% of those surveyed want Kan to resign either immediately (32%) or by the end of the current Diet session which finishes this month (36%).
Kan can draw some consolation from the Yomiuri poll as 67% shared his anti-nuclear stance. But even this support was qualified by 74% saying he should not have made the stance alone but consulted his Cabinet before making public his opposition to Japan’s dependence on nuclear power generation.
Asked about nuclear power plants, 49% said they should be reduced in number, a rise of three percentage points, 25% wanted to maintain the status quo, down four points, and 21% want them done away with completely, an increase of two percentage points.
Support for Kan’s Cabinet fell below the previous low for a DPJ administration in a Yomiuri poll, which had been recorded by former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in May 2010.
