TOKYO (majirox news) — Attendance at Comic Market 80 (Comiket) tied a single-day record Aug. 14, but overall attendance at the summer version of the world’s largest self-published book fair fell for the first time in five years, organizers Comic Market Preparatory Committee (ComiketPC) said.
Comiket closed at the Tokyo Big Sight having attracted a combined crowd of 540,000 over its three days of operation.
Even though a crowd of 200,000 attended the final day’s proceedings, the overall attendance dipped by 20,000 compared with the 2010 summer Comiket.
Organizers blamed the effects of the March 11 disasters for the decrease in crowds.
“We’d actually expected even fewer people, so we’re delighted that so many actually turned up,” a ComiketPC spokesman said.
Comiket is held twice yearly, once in summer and again in winter. It features doujinshi, or self-published manga comics. The next Comiket is due to be held at the Tokyo Big Sight from Dec. 29 through 31.
