Japan Prime Minister Naoto Kan

TOKYO (majirox news) — Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s Cabinet decided Aug. 15 on comprehensive political policy overview that included aiming to reduce Japan’s dependence on nuclear power generation.

With Kan’s resignation from the premiership expected within the end of this month, the move was somewhat symbolic as new major policy decisions will be left to the Cabinet of whoever succeeds him as prime minister.

But the Cabinet’s overview placed revolutionizing energy and environmental policies as national strategy for growth and recommended scrapping Japan’s existing energy basic plan, verifying nuclear power generation policies and creating scenarios for reducing dependence on nuclear power generation.

The Cabinet also postponed deciding on a date for taking part in negotiations for Japan to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.
