Kaieda to quit Cabinet, focus on DPJ leadership race

Banri Kaieda

TOKYO (majirox news) — Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Banri Kaieda will resign his Cabinet post Aug. 26 to focus on the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) leadership race, according to one of his closest allies.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan announced his resignation today, nearly three months after first indicating he would do so, following the passage of two major bills in parliament.

Megumu Tsuji, a DPJ House of Representatives member and close supporter of Kaieda, told reporters in Tokyo on Thursday night that Kaieda will backtrack on a statement he made Tuesday not to resign until the Cabinet does so en masse.

“He wants to be able to express his opinions on building an administration from a stance distinct from being a member of the government,” Tsuji said.

Tsuji said Kaieda will visit the Prime Minister’s Official Residence following expected passage through the Diet on Friday of a bill on renewable energy to hand in his resignation.
