Women’s world champs kick off Olympic qualifying with win

SHANDONG, China (majirox news) – Japan’s World Cup-winning women’s soccer team got its campaign to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games off to a good start here Sept.1 by defeating unfancied Thailand 3-0.

World Cup surprise packet Nahomi Kawasumi put the world champions ahead in the 61st minute and Asuna Tanaka added a second goal 14 minutes later. Any doubt about the result was ended just before injury time with an own-goal by the Thais.

Japan’s next match will be against South Korea on Saturday.

The Asian Group qualifying for the London Olympics will be through a round-robin tournament that ends on Sept. 11. Japan is up against hosts China, Australia, Thailand and North and South Korea, with the top two teams going on to the Games.
