SHANDONG, China (majirox news) — Nadeshiko Japan, the country’s World Cup-winning women’s soccer team, defeated South Korea 2-1 here on Sept. 3 in an Asian Qualifying Group match for the 2012 London Olympics.
Japan, starting with the same 11 that won the World Cup in July, was less than impressive, but did enough to remain unbeaten after two games in the round-robin qualifying tournament.
Japan took the lead in the 10th minute with a goal from Mizuho Sakaguchi, but conceded an equalizer 20 minutes later to South Korea’s Ji So-Yun.
Shinobu Ono put Japan back in front on the cusp of half-time and the World Champions held on to the 2-1 score line throughout the second half.
Olympic qualifying pits six teams in a round-robin tournament, with the top two teams going on to London. Japan and South Korea are joined in the tournament by hosts China, Thailand, Australia and North Korea. Japan’s next match is against Australia on Monday.
