FUKUSHIMA (majirox news) — A Fukushima Prefectural Government inspection group will tour Chernobyl next month to learn about such things as health management and decontamination, the prefectural government said.
Fukushima, which is struggling with the effects of the radiation-oozing Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, hopes its up-close study of the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster 25 years ago will aid in its own recovery.
“We can learn a lot from Chernobyl,” said local finance commentator Shuji Shimizu said. “There’s a lot of differences between Fukushima and Chernobyl, but there’s a lot in common, too. I want to bring that to the forefront.”
The inspection team will comprise officials responsible for the nuclear crisis from places such as the Fukushima prefecture municipalities of Minamisoma and Namie, as well as researchers from Fukushima University’s Disaster Recovery Laboratory and prefectural government officials.
The team will tour Chernobyl from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7.
