TOKYO (majirox news) — About 30,000 protestors marched in Tokyo on Sept. 19, calling for Japan to end nuclear power generation, according to TV Asahi.

Nobel laureate Kenzaburo Oe, writer Keiko Ochiai and actor Taro Yamamoto were among the public figures leading the march.

Marchers gathered in Meiji Koen Park in Tokyo’s Shinjuku-ku, marched along Aoyama Dori Ave. and outside JR Shinjuku Station, rallying against the use of nuclear power generation.

“No more nuclear power plants! No more Fukushimas!” the demonstrators chanted and waved banners as they marched.

Naomi Watanabe, 39, who brought her children to the demonstration, said, “I’m worried about the safety and health of my daughter and son, especially the food.”

The demonstration was part of the Sayonara Nukes campaign seeking the cancellation of all new nuclear plant construction, termination of existing nuclear power plants and closure of the nuclear fuel reprocessing plant, which uses plutonium.
