TEPCO assigns 9,000 to handle compensation claims

TOKYO (majirox news) — Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said Sept. 20 that it will assign a workforce of 9,000 to handle claims for compensation caused by the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Amid outrage over the complexity of compensation claim applications from the government and victims of the nuclear crisis triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, TEPCO is also considering simplifying the process.

Claims for full compensation – TEPCO has already made provisional compensation payments to some victims – will be accepted from October and the utility expects them to continue flooding in through to the end of this year.

It already had 6,500 people handling the claims, but judged they would not be able to get through the workload and better response was required. TEPCO said it will continue to decide on staff numbers and the duration of their assignment to handling compensation claims depending on the state of compensation application processing.
