TOKYO (majirox news) — Hiroshi Isoda, 67, was charged Sunday in connection with the shooting of a Sapporo man he evidently mistook for a deer, police said.

Unemployed Masafumi Aoyagi, 34, was fishing when a rifle bullet hit his left thigh. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

The shooting happened Oct. 16 at around 4:45 p.m. at the Nakazato Shiribetsu River in Hokkaido prefecture.

Authorities said unemployed Isoda was arrested for “negligence resulting in bodily injury” after shooting what he thought was a deer and then discovering that Aoyagi had been shot instead. Isoda was about 200 meters (656 feet) away from Aoyagi when the incident occurred.

Police described the focus of investigation as an accidental shooting.
