TOKYO (majirox news) — Celebrated conductor Seiji Ozawa performed Sunday night despite being extremely fatigued at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. The 76-year-old underwent treatment for cancer of the esophagus in January 2010.

Ozawa found motivation to perform because the Emperor and Empress were in the audience.

He conducted only one number from the stage, though, sometimes sitting in a chair, he appeared inspired.

He received an enthusiastic ovation and bravos from the audience.

Ozawa, who has worked with Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein, performed on Jan. 19th, but canceled on the 20th because of exhaustion. Continuing health problems have compelled him to cancel many appearances until this month.

Ozawa was musical director of the Vienna Philharmonic until 2010 and spent almost 30 years leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
