TEPCO Corrects Number to 100,000 Times Normal, Anti-Nuclear Demonstration in Tokyo

Tokyo (majirox news) High levels of radioactive materials were 100,000 times times the normal level detected in the water of the turbine building next to reactor No. 2, TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Co and plant operator) said. It was not “10 million times” that the utility company had announced yesterday, according to the Mainichi JP.

“The company said on Sunday evening that the data for iodine-134 announced earlier in the day was actually for another substance that has a longer half-life,” NHK said. “The plant operator said earlier on Sunday that 2.9 billion becquerels per cubic centimeter had been detected in the leaked water.”

Anti-nuclear demonstration in Tokyo
TOKYO (majirox news) – About 1,00 people rallied, waving banners with slogans such as “Stop all Nuclear Power Plants” in front of the head office of Tokyo Electric Co.(TEPCO) today in Tokyo’s ritzy Ginza area.

The demonstration included such groups as the National Congress of the Japanese to Ban Atomic Bombs and Nuclear Power. Tokyo resident Hiroshi Sugihara, 45, told the Mainichi JP that “the nuclear plants are dangerous and the government should disclose everything to its citizens.”

TEPCO Retracts announcement 10 million times
TEPCO has retracted its announcement on March 27 that 10 million times the normal density of radioactive materials had been detected in water at reactor No. 2 of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, NHK said on its Web site. TEPCO says it will conduct another test of the leaked water at the reactor’s turbine building.

The number is not credible, according to TEPCO spokesman Takashi Kurita. “We are very sorry.”

“The company said on Sunday evening that the data for iodine-134 announced earlier in the day was actually for another substance that has a longer half-life,” NHK said. “The plant operator said earlier on Sunday that 2.9 billion becquerels per cubic centimeter had been detected in the leaked water.”

Although the initial figure was wrong, the water still has a high level of radioactivity of 1,000 millisieverts per hour, which is four times the limit deemed safe by the government, Kurita said.

Plant and Ocean Higher Levels of Radiation
High levels of radioactive materials, 10 million times the normal level, were detected in the water of the turbine building next to reactor No. 2, according to NHK. It is possible that levels in the turbine building connected to reactor No. 1 has similar levels.

“It is highly likely the fuel rods have been damaged and high levels of radioactive materials leaked in the water,” said Naoto Sekimura, professor of atomic energy at Tokyo University. “I believe the leak is coming from the pipes and valves.”

According to Yukio Edano, the top government spokesman, “the pressure and containment vessels of reactors No. 1, 2 and 3 have not been damaged since the high pressure has been contained by the vessels.”

Yamazaki, an atomic specialist, said the water that contains radiation is complicating the clean up. They have to figure out someway to contain this water. Work on restoring the water pumps will be delayed.

Seawater
Today the Nuclear Industry and Safety Agency reported that tests detected higher levels of radiation in ocean water offshore, about 300 meters from the plant. It was 1,850.5 times the government set-standards, compared to 1,250 times yesterday.

We all know, regardless of the BS that is being spieled now by the idiots in charge, that reactor 2 suffered an explosion in the pressure suppression system early on, and lost all pressure in it. So we know this reactor is spewing core soup.

To the two posters below me, please try to stay calm and understand that throwing out unsubstantiated, uninformed rumors and speculations does not do anything productive.
