TOKYO (majirox news) — Nissan Motors collaborated with Production I.G. to design robots for the new TV anime Rinne no Lagrange (The Cycle of Reincarnation). Nissan won the competition out of 60 designers.
Nissan Designer Oosuda Takashi’s rendering was chosen as the protagonist robot. The other robots will be designed by Nissan designers.
Shiro Nakamura, Nissan’s managing director, said, “In animation, our GTR vehicle is always described as masculine, like the robot Gundam.” He added that Nissan’s car designers are influenced by animation.
Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, president of Production I.G. agreed. “Robots usually have a masculine design in anime, however, this one is curvy and feminine,” he said.
The new anime series is about Kyono Madoka, a 17-year-old girl who loves her hometown, Kamogawa, which is near the blue sea east of Tokyo. As the only girl member of Kamogawa Girls’ High School’s Jersey Club, she likes to help people in trouble. However, her life changes on the day she gets an unusual request from a mysterious girl named Ran: “Can you pilot a robot?”
Madoka then decides to protect Kamagawa and its people as she fights alien invaders from outer space. To fend off the enemy, Madoka, Ran, and a girl named Muginami pilot three robots.
Haruyuki Morisawa, the illustrator best known for the Dream Club games and the To Aru Hikūshi e no Tsuioku novel, designed the original character designs. Kimitake Yoshioka has already launched a manga version in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine.
The series will air in January 2012.
